Database

With the launch of phase two of Canadian Directories, we have added to the original fifteen pre-1901 directories that were selected to represent a range of types, dates, sizes, arrangements and geographical coverage. There are now 95 directories in the database, including a comprehensive collection of directories for Ottawa (spanning 1861 to 1901) and Halifax (1869 to 1901).

Microfiche versions of the directories, produced by the Canadian Institute for Historical Microreproductions (CIHM), were scanned to create the digitized copies. The directories have been digitized in their entirety, and users can view full-page images or zoom in to take a closer look.

Currently, the database supports keyword searching in one directory, or across all. Future phases of this project will add more pre-1901 Canadian directories, as well as enhanced searching capability.

Technical Information

This site uses the LizardTech DjVu software plug-in for viewing directory page images.

DjVu offers the ability to magnify, reduce and manipulate a directory page image. Without the plug-in, the page display appears in a standard image format that cannot be manipulated.

We recommend that you download DjVu for enhanced viewing of the directory images.

Acknowledgements

The National Library of Canada gratefully acknowledges the contribution of the Canadian Institute for Historical Microreproductions (CIHM) in the development of this project.

The Canadian Institute for Historical Microreproductions (CIHM), established in 1978, is a nonprofit organization for preserving and providing access to early Canadian publications, first on microfiche and now online. CIHM managed the scanning and metadata production for the pre-1901 directories database project, as well as providing quality control and optical character recognition (OCR) services. For more information about CIHM, visit www.canadiana.org/eco.php?doc=cihm.

We also appreciate the contribution of Mary Bond, Reference Librarian, for her essay on the history of Canadian directories.

We gratefully acknowledge the financial assistance of the Department of Canadian Heritage, whose Canadian Cultural Online Program (CCOP) made this work possible.
