Library and Archives Canada Lends Treasures for Exhibition

Library and Archives Canada has loaned a 17th-century Sefer Torah (a scroll containing the five books of Moses) as well as a selection of Bibles for the exhibition Ancient Treasures and the Dead Sea Scrolls, which will be on display at the Canadian Museum of Civilization from December 5, 2003 to April 12, 2004.

The exhibition of almost 100 artifacts dating from 1200 B.C.E to 700 C.E. is being produced by the Montréal Museum of Archaeology and History at Pointe-à-Callière in partnership with the Canadian Museum of Civilization and in collaboration with the Israel Museum and the Israel Antiquities Authority. The exhibition is also being presented in Montréal at Pointe-à-Callière from June 17, 2003 until November 2, 2003, under the name Archaeology and the Bible: From King David to the Dead Sea Scrolls.

The documents on loan are taken from the Jacob M. Lowy Collection, Canada's national collection of rare Hebraica and Judaica, and from the archival collection of Congregation Shearith Israel, Montréal’s Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, also housed in the Library and Archives of Canada.

"Library and Archives Canada is proud to be part of this exceptional international collaboration," said Cheryl Jaffee, Curator of the Jacob M. Lowy Collection. "In this exhibition we have a unique opportunity to display the Sefer Torah and the Bibles within their historic context, among the scrolls and artifacts of the Israel Museum."
