Since the development of the telephone switchboard, telephone operators have worked in close proximity to one another. Given that these operators are often all talking at once, their ability to concentrate on the client at the other end of the mouthpiece is an important job skill. Despite technological advances this century, switchboard operators still play an important role in the communications industry.
