In the early 20th century, Canada enjoyed a strong economy. Exports of wheat, pulp and paper, and minerals stimulated economic development and the arrival of new immigrants to the country. The economic crisis of 1929 hampered this vitality and impoverished the population, which saw the opening of a rich and dynamic mining area in Abitibi in north-western Quebec as an opportunity to escape from destitution.

Val-d'Or, a frontier town established in1934 at the height of the depression, is located approximately 420 km northwest of Montréal, and 340 km northeast of Ottawa.
