A Selective BibliographyCompiled by Dale BlakeAugust 2002The internationally renowned Canadian portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh (1908-2002) created an enduring legacy through his art. For over 60 years, he documented history by recording the influential people of his time, leaving us with striking and memorable portraits of such celebrated people as Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemingway, and Helen Keller. But what of the man himself -- the man behind the camera? This bibliography of materials available at the National Library of Canada was prepared to accompany the exhibition Karsh Masterworks -- A Tribute, produced by the National Archives of Canada and the Portrait Gallery of Canada. The selections included give some indication of the importance of Yousuf Karsh’s photographs not only for Canadian society, but also for an international audience. Anecdotes about Karsh and his subjects, autobiographical writings, Canadian cities that Karsh photographed, the “legends” that grew around his oeuvre -- all are included within the scope of this bibliography. We sincerely hope that it serves as a fitting and informative complement to the exhibition. Please note that the bibliographic descriptions are based on the National Library of Canada’s bibliographic style.
