The Death of Glenn Gould

Now it opens to winter,
the fire lit in solitude.

The photograph shows
a soul's privacy, perfect
yet passing, his dream
unready for sleep.

What dream in this coffin?
The man's compassion for
animals akin to formal ecstasies of Bach? We

mourners bring soul's scrutiny
to his beauty like a stem.

James Strecker, Bones to Bury: Poems and Sculpture, (London, Oakville, New York: Mosaic Press, 1984)
