SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES
Frank R. Wilson, M.D. is the Medical Director of the Peter F. Ostwald Health Program for Performing Artists at The University of California, San Francisco. A neurologist and associate clinical professor in the Graduate Program in Physical Therapy, Dr. Wilson has been a leading contributor to the international development of performing arts medicine during the past decade. His current research focuses on the neurologic and anthropologic foundations of manual skill, a subject which became the theme of a book, Raising the Human Hand, which will be published by Pantheon Books next year. His clinical work focuses on the management of occupational hand disorders and on the development of music learning strategies in neurologic rehabilitation. He is the author of Tone Deaf and All Thumbs, (Viking-Penguin, 1986).
Montreal-born Lise Deschamps Ostwald began to appear on concert stages in Canada when she was 9 years old. She made her radio debut on CBC at age 10, and while studying in Montreal with Edmond Trudel and the composer Auguste Descarries, she won many scholarships and prizes, including a Gold Medal in Solfège at age 17. At age 19, Lise Deschamps won First Prize in the Province of Quebec's Piano Competition, held at the Montreal Conservatory of Music. She then pursued her studies, as the recipient of scholarships from the Canada Council for the Arts, with the internationally renowned pianist Egon Petri in San Francisco. She has given solo recitals in Bonn, Düsseldorf, Leipzig, Strasbourg and other cities in Europe and North America, as well as performances with orchestras. Recently, she has collaborated with her husband, Peter F. Ostwald, M.D. on his final projects: an article on "Robert Schumann, his Illnesses and his Doctors" and a psychobiography Glenn Gould: The Ecstasy and Tragedy of Genius.
Humphrey Burton read music and history at Cambridge. He joined the BBC in 1955 as a studio manager specializing in music programs and transferred to BBC Television in 1958. After five years working on the Monitor arts program, he became BBC's first Head of the Music and Arts Department. He has also won four U.S. Emmy awards for his television work. In 1970 Burton produced Beethoven's birthday: a bicentennial celebration in Vienna. This was among the first of nearly two hundred programs he directed which feature the conductor and composer, Leonard Bernstein. Since 1981, Burton has combined a freelance career as a presenter and director of television opera and concerts with work as an impresario and writer. In 1988 he produced the Boston Symphony Orchestra's 70th birthday celebration at Tanglewood in honor of Leonard Bernstein. In 1992 he was the artistic director of Tender is the North, the Barbican Centre's prizewinning festival of Scandinavian arts. Humphrey Burton's biography of Leonard Bernstein was published by Faber in 1994. Currently he is narrating Menuhin Master Musician, a twenty-part radio biography for Classic FM. In July he directed the live telecast of Alban Berg's Lulu from Glyndebourne Opera.
Kevin Bazzana received his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Victoria (1988) and his M.A. in Music from Stanford University (1989). In 1996, he completed his Ph.D. in Music History and Literature at the University of California at Berkeley. He has long had a special interest in performers and performance; his doctoral dissertation, on Glenn Gould's performance practices, will be published later this year by Oxford University Press, under the title, Glenn Gould: The Performer in the Work. He has written for a variety of journals, magazines, encyclopedias, and record labels, and has taught music classes since 1993 at the University of Victoria. He is currently at work on a second book, a collection of essays about other "maverick" pianists of the twentieth century. He lives in Brentwood Bay, B.C., Canada, where he works as a freelance writer, editor, and lecturer.
Timothy Maloney, musicologist, historian and clarinetist, has been the Director of the Music Division at the National Library of Canada in Ottawa since 1988. He has had a diverse background in music, including conducting, performing in both classical and jazz idioms, university teaching and lecturing, research and publication, and editorial and administrative experience. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree and an Artist Diploma from the University of Toronto, a Master of Music degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the prestigious Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. In 1982 he was chosen to join a select group of 13 Canadian musicians participating in a new recording project under the musical direction of Glenn Gould. The first phase of this project was completed before the pianist's untimely death, and the CD of the chamber version of Wagner's Siegfried Idyll conducted by Gould is available in the Sony Classical catalogue under the title, "Glenn Gould Conducts and Plays Wagner." Dr. Maloney is currently a Director of the Glenn Gould Foundation and the President of the Canadian Music Centre.
Stephen Posen was born and educated in Toronto having received a B.A. in 1960 and an LL.B. in 1963, both from the University of Toronto. He has been practicing law since his call to the Bar of Ontario in 1965. Having specialized in litigation for the first two years of his practice, he joined his present firm, Minden, Gross, Grafstein & Greenstein, Toronto, in 1967 and is now a Senior Partner, having been managing partner for a number of years. He was a contributor and a member of the editorial committee of two legal texts and has participated as a lecturer and panelist in Continuing Legal Education Programs regularly since 1971 for a number of organizations including the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Canadian Bar Association, Canadian Professional Conferences, Insight International Services Limited and International Council of Shopping Centres. He was Glenn Gould's lawyer starting in approximately 1971 until his untimely death in 1982, and has continued to date to serve as the Executor of Glenn Gould's Estate.
