Governor General of Canada

As Canadians we should celebrate the 50th anniversary of our National Library, which is the repository of our history, not only as literature but also as a record of how we have lived our lives, how we wished to live our lives and how we are living them. Books are the most precious continuity that we have as a people and we must always treasure them. The National Library gives us this central focus for our life of books and we are enormously grateful to them for their continuing work.
