A Message from...
Prime Minister of Canada

It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the National Library of Canada on achieving its 50th anniversary.

Fifty years ago, the foresight of the Canadian government led to the creation of an institution which collects and preserves all that is published in this great country. Indeed, its roots are instrumental to democracy itself the unfettered dissemination of knowledge and information is vital to a society that prides itself on being free and open. Through the years, the Library has been a leader, demonstrating innovative dedication to ensure Canadians have access to information which is epitomized by such projects as the national catalogue AMICUS, and the Digital Library of Canada.

The Library is also home to Canada's artistic treasures. It ensures that Canadians from coast to coast to coast have the opportunity to enjoy our greatest literary and musical works and are able to fully appreciate our rich and varied culture.

With the merging of the Library and the Archives of Canada, as announced by the Minister of Canadian Heritage this past October, the Library is well poised to continue its mission to serve Canadians and showcase our culture today and for generations to come.

With all best wishes for the future,

The Right Honourable Jean Chrétien
Prime Minister of Canada
