What information is available on Indian treaties and land claims?
There are a number of sources that will help with Treaty research. One of these is the Indian and Northern Affairs Canada website, available at: www.ainc-inac.gc.ca. Once here, go to the link entitled "Historic Treaty Information" in the Publications & Research section, or go directly to this chapter available at: www.ainc-inac.gc.ca/pr/trts/hti/site/maindex_e.html. There is also another helpful link under "Information Sheets" in the Publications & Research section, at the following URL: www.ainc-inac.gc.ca/pr/info/is30_e.html.

See the section entitled "Treaties, law and land claims". This section currently includes many helpful links including one to the Indian Claims Commission, a bibliography of printed works on treaties for Indigenous peoples in Australia, Canada and the United States, and a site for Aboriginal Law and Legislation in various countries.

Click on "Claims and treaties" on the left side of the screen. Here are found various federal government links provided by INAC, Justice Canada, the Law Commission of Canada, National Defence and Natural Resources, as well as other related information sources.

Select your language of preference, At the left of the screen, under "Programs," click on "Treaties and Lands." This is a valuable source because there is a link to information not seen elsewhere, such as documentation on the AFN's Independent Claims Body.

Once here, type "Indian treaties" in the search box. Numerous entries will result, of varying levels of relevance.

The home page is that of a lawyer who has put together some information pertaining to Aboriginal and treaty rights. Once here, scroll down the page to two very relevant links entitled: A Brief Introduction to Aboriginal Law in Canada, and Aboriginal Law and Legislation Online. There are also many other relevant links at this site. The "Brief Introduction" is also available at:

There are many print resources on this topic. To search the online interface to the LAC National Union Catalogue, go to: http://amicus.collectionscanada.ca/aaweb/aalogine.htm. Once here, click on "Search"; then, choose an index such as "Subject Keyword," and type "Indian treaties Canada." Over 100 titles will result using the "Any AMICUS Database," some of which may be located locally.
Titles at LAC can be accessed through interlibrary loan. Service copies of titles in the Library and Archives' collections can normally be borrowed on interlibrary loan by making arrangements with a local public or university library.
