What is RPM?

RPM is a database that includes all charts music industry represented in the full publication run of RPM Weekly, from 1964 to 2000.

How does searching work?

There are three ways to search the RPM database: simple keyword searching, advanced searching and browsing.

Simple keyword searching

Simple keyword searching is available everywhere on this Web site. Type your keyword(s) in the search box and click "Go".

Simple keyword searching searches the indexes of all the charts in the database. When you enter more than one keyword, the database will automatically enter the Boolean operator "and" between your terms.

Advanced searching

Advanced searching allows you to limit your search to a specific chart type.

Browsing

To browse through the charts in the database, select "Browse by Chart" or "Browse by Date".

"Browse by Chart" allows you to search the database for issues of RPM that contain charts of a certain type (e.g. country or rock). Selecting a chart type will generate a results list of RPM issues that contain charts of that type. From the results list, simply select an issue to view the chart.

"Browse by Date" provides a list of RPM issues organized by year from 1964 to 2000. Selecting a date will bring you a list of charts for that issue.

Search results

The results screen provides a list of RPM issues that match your search or browse term(s). The results list is sorted randomly. Each listing includes an issue title, the volume number and issue number, and the date of publication. Clicking on an entry will bring you to the chart for this issue. Two view options are provided: click on "Standard" for the plain page image or "DjVu" for zooming and panning of the page image.

Chart display

Selecting an entry from the results list will take you to the chart display. The display differs depending on whether you are using the standard view of a chart or are using the DjVu browser plug-in for an enhanced view.

We recommend that you download DjVu for enhanced viewing of the charts. DjVu offers users the ability to magnify, reduce and manipulate a chart. Without the plug-in, the chart appears in a standard image format that cannot be manipulated.

On each page of the database, you will see the "Download DjVu" button for downloading DjVu and the "DjVu" button for using DjVu to display the enhanced image view. You only need to download the DjVu plug-in once and then you can use it each time you visit the database. If you have downloaded the plug-in, you have the option of switching back and forth between viewing images with the plug-in (enhanced view) or without (standard view).

Downloading the free DjVu browser plug-in

To download the DjVu plug-in, select "Download DjVu". This button links to an instruction page with links for downloading.

If you have downloaded the DjVu plug-in during a previous visit, simply click on "DjVu" to use the plug-in.

Enhanced (DjVu) view of a chart

Once you have downloaded the DjVu browser plug-in, select "DjVu" to view charts with the plug-in.

The chart is displayed in a frame, with a toolbar along the top of the frame. The toolbar allows you to manipulate the chart by zooming in or out on the image, rotating the image or highlighting a portion of the image. You can also search for a term in the page image. For information on how to use DjVu, see the DjVu help file, which can be found by right-clicking on the image and selecting "Help".

Standard view of a chart

If you choose not to download the DjVu plug-in, you will see the chart in standard image format.

Printing a chart

The method for printing a chart differs depending on whether or not you are viewing the page in the standard view or the enhanced view (DjVu).

To print a chart from the standard view, select "Print" from your browser's File menu. The chart image will print, as well as the navigational toolbars.

To print a chart from the enhanced view (DjVu), select the print icon from the toolbar at the top of the image frame or right-click on the image and select "Print". In the enhanced view, if you select print from your browser's file menu only the navigational toolbars of the Web site will print.
