Introduction

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, a growing number of people left the British Isles each year to settle in North America.

The city of Québec, founded in 1608, was the main destination for these immigrants because of its location on the St. Lawrence River, North America's major navigable waterway. By 1830, therefore, Québec received on average each year 30,000 new immigrants, two thirds of whom were Irish.
