Comments on food and travel

Page from William Logan's journal listing the names of his dinner companions and what he had for dinner and commenting on travel arrangements

Soon as we arrived we ordered dinner which was served up in the following style.

The fair Miss Baily to make tea

Sweet sause Tea tray & tea things W.E.L. Mr. Lindsay Moose steak Hot rolls Custard

I found that the Andover mail does not leave there until Friday & I fear I am bound here until then. I do not like the system of private waggons it is too expensive & I fear if I patronize it too much my funds will not last. Lindsay charged me 4 $ for my entertainment & travel, which considering that he has carried my portmanteau 17 miles or rather say 14 ½ I cannot consider extravagant.
