Single-ruffle Cap
In New France, girls and women always wore caps, called a coif, to cover their hair. They wore many different types of caps or bonnets depending on the age of the wearer. Some caps were even worn to sleep in.
Materials
- fabric, any colour or pattern you like
- bias tape
- elastic (big enough to go around your head)
- scissors
- needle
- thread
- small safety pin

Step 1. Cut a circle of fabric measuring 18 inches in diameter. Cut a second circle 16 inches in diameter. |

| Step 2. Sew the bias tape around the edge of the larger circle, by hand or by machine. |

Step 3. Place the smaller circle in the middle of the larger circle and sew them together around the edge. Sew another line inside the first line of sewing, about ½ inch from the first. |

| Step 4. Cut a piece of elastic big enough to go around your head. Pin a small safety pin to one end. Make a hole in the smaller circle, between the two lines of sewing. |

Step 5. Thread the pin and elastic through the hole. Keep threading the elastic through until the safety pin goes completely around the circle and comes out again through the hole. The material will begin to bunch up, making a ruffle. Sew the two ends of the elastic together. |
