Prisonniers de guerre et internement

Même s'il n'y a pas eu beaucoup de prisonniers de guerre des grandes puissances internés au Canada au cours de la Première Guerre mondiale, de nombreux ressortissants de pays ennemis ont été internés, souvent dans des conditions difficiles, dans des camps administrés par la Milice canadienne. La responsabilité de ces camps avait été confiée à sir William Otter, vétéran de Ridgeway, de Cut Knife Hill et de Paardeberg, et aussi premier général de la Milice canadienne né au pays; Morton décrit bien ces opérations dans sa biographie.

De nombreux Canadiens ont été détenus en Allemagne et, encore une fois, Morton relate leurs problèmes. Le travail majeur de Jonathan Vance sur les prisonniers canadiens a été élaboré à partir de sa thèse de doctorat. Un nombre considérable de narrations à la première personne documente l'expérience des prisonniers de guerre canadiens dans les camps allemands.
