Joseph Pickering, Inquiries of an Emigrant: Being the Narrative of an English Farmer from the Year 1824 to 1830, 1831, title pages and pages 70-72.
Emigrant guides, such as this one written by Joseph Pickering, were full of practical information and counsel for would-be immigrants. Writers addressed topical issues of concern to potential newcomers such as climate, agriculture and the all-important expenditure of funds, as evidenced in these pages. While Pickering's guide is based on his personal diary, other guides were more academic or instructive in nature.
