CARPATHIA NEARING PORT WITH SURVIVORSTHE WORLD AWAITS NEWS OF DISASTER TO THE TITANICCARPATHIA CARRYING THE SURVIVORS TO NEW YORKExpected to be in Communication With Sable Island at Midnight Last Night-Everything Possible Being Done to Obtain Complete Information as to the Disaster and Details of Rescues. THE KNOWN SURVIVORS 868 FIRST CABIN PASSENGERS ACCOUNTED FOR 200 It was suspected that the Carpathia, carrying the Titanic’s survivors, would be in wireless communication with Sable Island at midnight last night. She may reach New York on Thursday evening. The list of passengers cabled from England at the time the Titanic sailed was incomplete, a number joining the ship at Cherbourg. A number of workmen from the Belfast shipyards were also on board for observation purposes, hence the difficulty of arriving at an approximately correct number of the lost. ONLY SURVIVORS ARE ON CARPATHIA.CAPE RACE, Nfld., April 16 – A wireless message to-night from Capt. Haddock of the steamship Olympic, relayed by the Celtic, reads as follows: MAKING DIRECT FOR NEW YORK.NEW YORK, April 16 – (Special.) Somewhere in the Atlantic, pointed direct for this port, the Cunard Liner Carpathia is speeding along as fast as her engines will drive her, bringing 868 of the passengers and crew of the White Star Liner Titanic, which sank early Monday morning 800 miles off Newfoundland after her collision with an iceberg. She will make no stop until she reaches this port, and here she will not be held up at quarantine, for since leaving here for a cruise in the Mediterranean she has stopped at no foreign port. Nevertheless, it is not believed that the liner can reach here before late to-morrow afternoon or early Friday morning. Then she will go direct to the Cunard pier at the foot of Twelfth, Thirteenth and Fourteenth streets and the North River. LIST OF SURVIVORS NOT COMPLETE.Not until then, perhaps, will it be known just how many of the passengers of the Titanic have been saved. So far only 400 names have been wirelessed from the Carpathia, though it was reported that 868 were saved. Certain it is that between 1,200 and 1,300 of the ship’s complement have been lost, but who are the 868 that have been saved cannot be fully told. It is known that the Carpathia was in wireless communication with the Olympic of the White Star Line as late as 2.30 a.m. Monday, and the Olympic, with her greater wireless range, sent the list of those rescued and then aboard the Carpathia to the wireless station at Cape Race, Newfoundland. SOME UNANSWERED QUESTIONS.But at 2.30 o’clock the Olympic ceased adding more names to the list of rescued, though the steamer continued in wireless communication with Cape Race for another hour, finally steaming out of range with a message of farewell about daybreak. Why the last hour was not utilized to send out names of rescued passengers, if such were aboard the Carpathia, cannot be guessed. It is possible that the Carpathia got out of range of the Olympic while that steamer was still in communication with Cape Race. |
