Scope and content
A sole Plains Indian left to die on the prairies by his people. The work is listed in the London Royal Academy Exhibition Catalogue for 1872 as no.149.
The General Thomas J. Grant album in the photography collection (Acc.no. 1960-51) contains a photograph of this work showing a slightly different composition.
The shirt and leggings worn in this painting are copied from items which were formerly in the collection of the artist's husband, Edward Hopkins. The collection is now at Pitt Rivers Museum, University of Oxford.
