Settings

For best results when you view the Virtual Vault 3D Gallery, we recommend that you use the following settings on your computer:

  • Set the amount of space allocated for temporary Internet files to 100 MB or higher.
  • Set your Internet browser to check for newer versions of stored pages every time you visit a page.
  • Set your Internet security to the default level.
  • Set the visual effects setting of your operating system to choose what is best for your computer.

Navigation

Browsing through the Virtual Vault 3D Gallery is just like visiting a real art gallery. First you enter the building; then you go to the particular exhibition you want to see; and finally, you walk around the exhibition room looking at the pictures that interest you.

Enter the Gallery:Click on the button "3D Gallery" in the upper right corner of the Virtual Vault homepage.
Choose an exhibition:Click on a theme: "People," "Landscapes" or "Transportation and Maps."
Walk forward:Click and hold the "Walk Forward" arrow.
Walk backward:Click and hold the "Walk Backward" arrow.
Turn to one side:Click on "Pivot Right" or "Pivot Left."
Move to a painting automatically:Click on the painting.
Move your head to look left:Click on "Look Left."
Move your head to look right:Click on "Look Right."
Move your head to look up:Click on "Look Up."
Move your head to look down:Click on "Look Down."
Read the title of a painting and the artist's name:Click on the text panel beside the painting.
Learn more about a painting:Click on "Source." This will take you to a new Web page showing a descriptive record from the Library and Archives Canada database.
Examine a painting up close:Click on the magnifying glass beside the picture. This will open a new image of the painting that will let you zoom in and see it in great detail. Click again to zoom in more. Move the zoomed image around by clicking and dragging your cursor; or click and drag your cursor on the small red box in the small version of the picture in the upper left corner of your screen to move the main image.
