Faces of War Online Help
There are two search functions available: Basic Search and Advanced Search.
Basic Search
Enter any keyword into the text box and click "Submit."
Advanced Search
You may search by branch (Army, Navy, Air Force), by geographical location, or by the name of a photographer.
Each of these search categories has a list of keywords to help you in your search. They are used as follows:
- Click on the button for the list of keywords you want. This will take you to another page that lists the keyword choices.
Example:
- Click on "Army" to get a list of divisions, units and other useful keywords.
- Click on the keyword you want. You will be returned to the search page and the appropriate search box will contain your selected keyword.
Example:
- From the "Army" list of keywords, click on "4th Canadian Armoured Brigade."
- You will be returned the Advanced Search page, and the "Search by Branch" box will now contain "4th Canadian Armoured Brigade."
- Click on the "Submit" button to start the search.
You may enter your own keyword into the box instead of using the lists of keywords.
You may also use the search boxes in any combination.
Example:
- Select "Canadian Armoured Corps" from the "Army" list of keywords. Enter "France" into the "Search by Geographical Location" box. Click on "Submit."
- This will search the database for all photographs of the Canadian Armoured Corps that were taken in France.
NOTE: The lists of keywords are not exhaustive. For example, the "Army" list of keywords does not contain every unit that served in the Second World War. The keywords reflect actual records in the database and are intended to help you in your search.
