1988 - Wayne Gretzky is Traded

The most shocking hockey trade occurred in the summer of 1988. After 10 dazzling years with the Edmonton Oilers, Wayne Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings. The Great One, as he was called, made the announcement at a news conference, breaking down in tears several times as he spoke. Considered one of the greatest hockey players of all time and certainly one of its brightest stars, Wayne was born in Brantford, Ontario. After he left the NHL, his jersey with the famous number 99 was retired for all time. There will never be another 99!

Gretzky gone.

Les Oilers vendent Gretzky à Los Angeles pour $10 millions.
