Introduction to the Collections

The three manuscript collections described below are available for study and consultation at the National Library and National Archives of Canada. These collections contain significant historical materials from the lives of Susanna Moodie and Catharine Parr Traill, such as letters, photographs, manuscripts, journals, watercolours, albums and scrapbooks.

Patrick Hamilton Ewing Collection of Moodie-Strickland-Vickers-Ewing Family Papers

Literary Manuscript Collection, National Library of Canada

1821–1949, 2.5m of textual record and other material

The fonds1 contains correspondence (171 letters) mainly from the Strickland sisters to family members in Canada, from Donald Moodie to his brother, and letters exchanged between Susanna and J. W. Dunbar Moodie; manuscripts of Susanna and J. W. Dunbar Moodie; original watercolours by Susanna and one portrait of Susanna; photographs; clippings and memorabilia. The collection concerns principally Susanna Strickland Moodie, John Wedderburn Dunbar Moodie and their families.

Traill Family Collection

n.d., 1816–1974, 2.503m of textual records, 1 reel of microfilm, ca. 592 photographs, 221 prints, 17 drawings, 15 watercolours and other graphic material

The collection contains over 300 original letters written by Catharine Parr Traill 1845–1899, journals, literary manuscripts, family photographs, samples of Susanna Moodie's flower paintings and extensive family correspondence. The correspondence includes letters written by Susanna Moodie 1850–1882 and correspondence from various Traill descendants to 1966. The collection also includes a small amount of Thomas Traill material copied on microfilm from a private collection in England and photocopies of Catharine Parr Traill letters from the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge Collection at the University of London.

Susanna Moodie Collection

n.d., 1828–1914, 1966, 0.100m of textual records and 2 microfilm reels

The collection includes nine original letters written by Susanna Moodie from 1871 to 1882, and transcripts and microfilm copies of another 29 Moodie letters, dated from 1826 to 1871, mostly copied from the Bentley Papers at the British Library and various collections at the Suffolk Record Office, Ipswich. The collection also contains original literary manuscripts by Moodie, copies of a few publishing records, two original letters from Scottish poet and prominent anti-slavery activist Thomas Pringle and six letters from Catharine Parr Traill.
