Saulteaux Indians, Manitoba
1887, by Joseph Tyrrell

Geologists such as Tyrrell were the first to create a record of what existed beyond the bounds of "civilized" society. They recognized that their research had to extend into areas other than rocks and minerals if Canada was to become better known to the world. With this philosophy in mind, Tyrrell photographed this family of Saulteaux Indians during a research trip to northwestern Manitoba in 1887.
