Portée et contenu
Sub-series consists of the diaries of Eleanora Hallen. The earliest volume was written at the age of 11, and records the daily life of a child from a middle-class family during her last year in rural England. This account describes Eleanora's experiences and feelings on many subjects including relationships with relatives and neighbours, education, play, customs and celebrations, religion, health and more. It also provides information indirectly about child-rearing, socialization, class structures, household economy etc. The diaries continue with detailed descriptions of life aboard ship during the family's transatlantic crossing of 1835, followed by impressions of their stay in New York State, and the challenges of adjusting to life in Upper Canada. The latter volumes again describe familial and neighbourly relationships. They also document both the physical hardships of backwoods life, and the culture shock of adapting to a new society. Eleanora's childhood diaries are illustrated throughout by small pen and ink vignettes which serve as visual depictions of the written text. The diaries resume after a chronological gap of eight years. Later volumes offer a young adult's perspective of life in a region which was rapidly undergoing settlement and cultivation by the plough. The diaries end in 1846, the year of Eleanora's death.
