Notre-Dame Church
On 7 June 1829, Notre-Dame Church in Montréal was dedicated. This daring and innovative design on a scale then unequalled in North America was by James O'Donnell, an Irish architect who had immigrated to New York. It was carried out in the face of strong criticism from the architecturally conservative Abbé Jérôme Demers of Québec City, who decried the "protestantism" of its Gothic style and rectangular plan (without apse or transepts).
