Smoking in the MoviesSmoking in Movies

In recognition of World No Tobacco Day, here is some food-for-thought on the topic of smoking in movies. Some medical experts have suggested that eliminating smoking scenes in youth-related films would have a significant impact on healthy lifestyle choices of young people. A recent decision by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) will bring this health intervention one step closer to reality. The MPAA announced in May 2007 that it will now consider smoking as a factor in rating films. If a film pushes the boundaries of violence, sexuality, and language, and also includes characters who smoke, it is more likely to receive an 'R' rating. Media Awareness Network encourages you to discuss the issue of smoking in movies with your children or students.
