Bank of Canada

The principal mission of the Bank of Canada is the formulation and implementation of Canada’s national monetary policy to promote the economic and financial welfare of the country. Canadian Wheat Board
(President and Chief Executive Officer)

The Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) markets wheat and barley for export and for domestic human consumption on behalf of western Canadian farmers. All proceeds from sales, less marketing costs, are passed back to farmers. The CWB operates as a shared-governance corporation under the Canadian Wheat Board Act. The CWB’s objects and powers are to market wheat and barley for the best value and in an orderly manner, and its vision is to be an innovative world leader in marketing grain in order to create value for Prairie farmers.

Canada Foundation for Sustainable Development Technology
(Chairperson)

Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) is a not-for-profit foundation, established by the Government of Canada in 2001. It manages a $550M fund to help Canadian entrepreneurs develop and demonstrate clean technology solutions: products and processes that contribute to clean air, clean water and soil, and mitigate GHG emissions, while improving the productivity, profitability and global competitiveness of Canadian industry. In addition, SDTC has received a further $500M in the 2007 Federal Budget to work with the private sector in the development and initial operation of production facilities for next generation biofuels. SDTC also undertakes analyses of promising emerging technologies.

National Capital Commission
(Chief Executive Officer)

The National Capital Commission (NCC), established in 1958 under the National Capital Act, is a federal Crown corporation whose mandate is to foster pride and unity by making the National Capital Region (NCR) a meeting place for all Canadians, to plan the physical development of the Capital and to safeguard and preserve national treasures in the Capital. To fulfil its mandate the NCC approves and coordinates the acquisition and development of federal lands in the NCR and organizes or promotes activities or events related to the NCR.

The Citizenship Commission

The Citizenship Commission is an administrative tribunal within Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). The Commission is comprised of all citizenship judges working across Canada. Its mandate is to review approximately 130,000 citizenship applications each year and administer the oath of citizenship and stress the rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizenship. The Commission ensures the integrity of the citizenship process is maintained and promotes citizenship by working with school boards, service clubs, multicultural groups and other community organizations.

Human Resources and Social Development Portfolio

The Minister of Human Resources and Social Development and the Minister of Labour are responsible for recommending Governor in Council (GIC) appointments to 11 different bodies, including administrative tribunals, boards, a commission and advisory groups (eg., CPP/OAS Review Tribunals and Employment Insurance Boards of Referees). These bodies perform a variety of functions, including making quasi-judicial decisions in appeal processes; providing advice and recommendations on socio-economic development and occupational health and safety issues; and administering programs and establishing policy for post-secondary education funding.

National Parole Board

The National Parole Board (NPB) is an independent, administrative tribunal. As part of the criminal justice system, the NPB makes independent, quality conditional release and pardon decisions and clemency recommendations. Notice of vacant positions are posted in the Canada gazette. NPB consists of not more than forty-five full time GIC members and a varying number of temporary GIC members which are dictated by the regional workload of the Board.

Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada

The Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) of Canada is an independent administrative tribunal. The IRB hears refugee protection claims made in Canada, hears immigration appeals, holds admissibility hearings and conducts detention reviews. As independent single decision-makers, RPD and IAD members conduct hearings and render decisions on immigration appeals and refugee claims.

Veterans Review and Appeal Board Veterans Review and Appeal Board

The Veterans Review and Appeal Board (VRAB) adjudicates review and appeal applications which may provide financial compensation to eligible veterans, civilians, Canadian Force and RCMP members and dependents for death and/or disability related to war, peacekeeping or peacetime service. Interested persons may apply at any time; VRAB reviews and screens applications twice yearly. VRAB consists of not more than 29 permanent GIC members and a varying number of temporary GIC members which are dictated by the workload of the Board.
