The NWT Archives' primary task is to ensure that a fair, accurate and complete record of government activity is identified, acquired and preserved. The NWT Archives attempts to ensure that the preservation of archives relevant to the human history of the NWT, created by individuals and organizations in the private sector, are also preserved and made accessible. Our holdings document the history of the NWT including among other things the oral tradition and history of the NWT first nations, constitutional development in the NWT leading up to the creation of Nunavut, the activities of the Government of the Northwest Territories since 1967, the fur trade, aviation industry and the development of the mining industry.

  Record Schedules

The disposition of government records must be an orderly, transparent and routine administrative process. This is achieved by Record Disposition Authorities (sometimes refer to as record schedules) that provide details about records that departments create and how they are to be disposed of, either through destruction or transfer to archives. Record Disposition Authorities must be approved by the Public Records Committee established under the Archives Act.

IMPORTANT- The schedules listed here are provided for the advice of the public and may not be up to date or accurate. For an official copy of any record disposition schedule contact the Chair of the PRC, the NWT Archives, or the Records Management Unit of the Department of Public Works and Services.
