Finding theses and dissertations

Theses and dissertations are extended scholarly essays that incorporate original research on a specific topic. They are usually written as part of the requirements for a graduate degree at academic institutions.

To find University of Guelph (UG) theses:

1998 to August 2002: Search Theses Canada Portal for full text electronic versions free to anyone.
1997 to present: Search Dissertations and Theses (ProQuest) for full text electronic versions free to students, faculty and staff. Search by keyword, title, advisor or school or browse by subject.
All Guelph theses: Search TRELLIS for microform or paper versions.If defended within the last 2 years it may not be in the catalog. After a student convocates, their thesis is sent to the library, then sent to be bound, then scanned into microfiche format and then entered into the catalog. A paper copy is held in the Annex and a microform copy is held in the basement Government Publications section. They do not circulate. To request to use the paper copy in the library place the Annex copy on hold.

Canadian 1998 to August 2002: Search Theses Canada Portal for full text electronic versions of most Canadian theses, free to anyone
Canadian 1965-1997: Search Theses Canada Portal for citations & abstracts only
Canadian, U.S. & European (1861 to present): Search Dissertations and Theses (ProQuest) for citations & abstracts only and view a 24 page preview (1997 to present).
Any thesis in progress: Search PhdData.org not comprehensive

To borrow non-UG theses:

You can borrow a thesis if a circulating copy is available. Search RACER.
If you do not find the item, complete a blank RACER (choose Blank Request Form ).
For Canadian theses dated 1998 to August 2002, search Theses Canada Portal to download free full-text.

To buy your own copy of a thesis:

If the title you want is not available on loan, you may order an unbound paper copy online at Dissertation Express. Cost is approximately $38.00 US, and your purchase is not subsidized by the Library.
