Search for Photographs Related to Project Naming

This database provides access to all of the photographs digitized as part of Project Naming. Many have new title descriptions in which the individuals are identified, while the subjects of others remain unidentified. Phase II features a new keyword term, "daily life," which has been added to some photographic records depicting activities such as hunting and fishing. These images provide historical context for the forthcoming "Classroom Discussions" section (coming in winter 2008).

The majority of photographs in this database were taken in the Northwest Territories, which became the territory of Nunavut in 1999. In Phase II, photographs from areas of present-day Northwest Territories and Quebec that are in close proximity to the border of Nunavut have also been added to the database. These photographs can be searched in "Non-Nunavut Locations."

Enter one or more keywords to begin the search (e.g. name of individual, community, photographer, date or activity of daily life). As much as possible, communities have been cross-referenced with both their Inuit and non-Aboriginal names.

We are currently updating information in the Project Naming database. As a result, technical problems may arise in your search for certain photographs. We will resolve these issues as soon as possible and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
