Every November 5 to 11, Canadians embrace Veterans' Week as a time to honour those who served and fought, and died for our country. They fought to oppose tyranny, restore peace, and avert war. They fought for freedom.
Veterans’ Week is also a time to honour and recognize the contributions of the valiant men and women of today’s Canadian Forces who carry the torch, contributing to international peace and security around the world and at home. Every one of them who has returned from an operational deployment is a Veteran.
2007 is the 90th Anniversary of the battles of Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele and the 65th Anniversary of the Dieppe raid. Our Veterans’ courage, their dedication and their sacrifice helped to make us a nation and take up our place in the civilized world.
Like their predecessors who stormed the beaches of Normandy and contributed to the liberation of Europe from the forces of evil, today’s Canadian Forces build upon this honoured, sacred legacy.
We must never forget.
