The Web site

The Canada Aviation Museum has been on-line since 1996 and, in 2004, launched a completely redesigned site. The look and feel of the new site reflects the mission of the Museum: to create a greater appreciation for Canada’s aviation heritage, demonstrate the vital role of aviation in the lives of Canadians and illustrate the significance of aviation in the growth and prosperity of this country. Through the use of archival photographs from our collection, the human side of aviation with all its stories begins to unfold. The new site also has more content and it’s even more accessible. It is one of the few web sites, if not the only one, that gives information about aviation in both official languages. The Museum’s redesign team collaborated with lab)idéeclic!, a multimedia company, to incorporate standards from the W3C, the WAI and the Web Standards Project; as a result, accessibility is vastly improved.

Some of the accessibility features that have been designed into the site include functions such as a “Skip over navigation” link for those using text only browsers and screen readers. This allows you to go directly to the content without having to tab through all the navigation links. If the text size of our new site appears too small, the user can increase the size of the text by clicking on the A/A icon in the top navigation bar of this site. This will increase the default text size to a size that is easier to read. For the most part the site is free of Macromedia Flash and other elements that could make some pages inaccessible to those requiring text browsers. The only section that uses Flash is “Explore”.

With the new redesign, the content on the site is better organized to meet the needs of its various audiences. Visitors who require “quick” information about the physical site go to“ Visit”, while teachers are able to get information about school programs in the “School Zone”. In “Collections”, the avid aviation researcher will find information about the artifacts, research papers as well as the Image Bank of some 15,000 images. There is even a specific area about events at the Museum that the media will find convenient. The “Explore” section features our first on-line exhibit, “Let There Be Flight”, which is patterned after one on the floor. Postcards of various images from the Museum’s collection are available throughout the site on the top navigation bar for sending a quick message with an aviation theme.

As with our Museum, our web site will continue to change and grow. More content will be added through various means such as additional research papers, access to collection catalogues and on-line exhibits. Research will continue so that standards for accessibility are maintained. Exploring our site will continue to provide a rich and meaningful experience for our web audience.
