Internet security

The security of information transmitted via the Internet is of prime importance to the CRA. State-of-the-art encryption technology and security procedures protect your private information at all times.

While every effort is made to ensure the safety and integrity of Web transactions, the Internet is a public network and therefore cannot be entirely controlled by any organization offering Internet services.

Restricted access

Access to BRO is limited to Internet users who provide "unique identifiers" by which the CRA can perform a security check and confirm who is accessing the BRO system. These identifiers include your name, social insurance number (SIN), mailing address, and telephone number.

To help keep your registration information confidential, we recommend the following:

• Verify the BRO site's security certificate
• Confirm the existence of the BRO site's security certificate, which is issued by Entrust. Simply click on the key or lock symbol that will appear in the bottom corner of your screen, just before you begin to enter your registration information.

128-bit secure sockets layer (SSL)

We use 128-bit SSL encryption to prevent hackers or other Internet users from viewing or altering information while it's being transmitted. The SSL protocol provides a safe passage for the transmission of your data and our authentication processes.

This is the most secure form of encryption commonly available in North America and is a typical requirement for Web-based services, such as on-line banking or shopping, where securing personal information is a priority.

If you do not have a browser with 128-bit secure sockets layer (SSL) encryption, you should download a more recent version. Although other browsers may also function, we've tested two that have proven to work with BRO:

• Netscape NavigatorTM: (Version 4.x but not 6.0)
• Microsoft Internet Explorer®: (Version 4.x or higher. The 5.5 version may require a service pack)
