Section title: Introduction: The Story Behind Project Naming
Photo of Atootoo, Cape Dorset (Kinngait), 1929. Reference no. PA-101314

Welcome to Phase II of Project Naming. The goal of this project is the identification of Inuit portrayed in some of the photographic collections of Library and Archives Canada (LAC) in Ottawa. It is an ongoing initiative, which enables Nunavut youth to connect with Elders and to better understand their past. It also helps to bridge the cultural differences and geographical distances between Nunavut and the more southern parts of Canada.

Project Naming is a collaborative effort between Nunavut Sivuniksavut, which offers a special college program based in Ottawa, serving Inuit youth from Nunavut; Nunavut's Department of Culture, Languages, Elders and Youth (CLEY); and LAC.

As a tribute to the importance of language in Project Naming, this Web exhibition is available in Inuktitut, English and French. To view Project Naming in Inuktitut, you will need a Pigiarniq font. This font can be downloaded for free in either PC or Mac fonts at: www.multedata.ca/p20.htm.
