A Time to Remember at the Canada Aviation Museum
Ottawa—In honour of the tremendous contributions and sacrifices made by members of our Canadian Forces, past and present, the Museum invites everyone to take part in special programming. These activities include a special performance by the Centralaires concert band, special guest speakers, documentary presentations and family activities.
Admission is free for veterans, Canadian Forces members and their immediate family from November 4 to November 11. Air, army and navy cadets in uniform are also included in this invitation.
Saturday and Sunday, November 3-4 – Special Display

Sunday, November 4 – Special Entertainment
Centralaires Concert Band—“Salute to the Forces”
2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Under the direction of Conductor Fran Chilton Mckay, the band is an affiliate of the Air Force Association of Canada. It comprises fifty wind and percussion instrument players, some of whom are retired from the RCAF Central Band, the Central Band of the Canadian Armed Forces, the RCMP Band, or the Governor General’s Foot Guards. It also includes local music teachers and other accomplished instrumentalists.
This “Salute to the Forces” is the first of a series of four afternoon concerts at the Museum from now until Spring 2008.
Saturday, November 10 – Family Connections
Special Guest Speakers
Join our special guests as they talk about the role of their ancestors in the Great War and the Second Wold War.
Mr. Cameron MacDonald
11:00 a.m.
Mr. MacDonald will talk about his great uncle and flying ace, Captain Roderick MacDonald who, while posted to 8 Naval Squadron in 1917, scored his victories flying Sopwith Tri-plane and Camel aircraft before being shot down over Provin, France in 1917.
Squadron Sergeant Major Steve Bailey
11:30 a.m.
Join our guest as he shares his uncle’s story, Pilot Officer Elmer Lincoln Bailey from 429 Squadron, No. 6 Group (Canadian) and his role as the navigator aboard a Halifax III, on a raid on the German military camp at Bourg - Leopold Belgium on May 27 and 28, 1944, during World War II. Tragically his plane collided with another Canadian Halifax III, just two days after being promoted to the rank of Pilot Officer.
Squadron Sergeant Major Bailey will also relate his own wartime experience in Iraq where he served for a year with the US Army on exchange. This will be followed by a questions and answers period.
Mr. John Moses
1:30 p.m.
A conservator at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, Mr. Moses’ presentation will focus on his great uncle’s role in the First World War Lieutenant James David Moses was a member of the Delaware band from the Six Nations of the Grand River Reserve near Brantford, Ontario, and was reported missing on 1 April 1918 while serving as an air gunner and observer in a DH-4 aircraft with 57 Squadron RAF.
Mr. Moses will also share his experience participating in Brian McKenna’s documentary “The Great War”. This will be followed by a questions and answers period.
Documentary Presentation
The documentary “The Great War” produced by Brian McKenna, and recently aired on CBC Television will play in the Museum’s Bush Theatre. The French version will be shown in the morning and the English version in the afternoon.
Children’s Activities
10 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Children can assemble a commemorative dossier with three wartime poems. They can learn the stories about the men who wrote them all the while colouring and pasting First and Second World War aircraft cut-outs on their projects.
Sunday, November 11 – Remembrance Day
The Role of Canadians in the Battle of Britain
1:15 p.m.
Many Canadians distinguished themselves in this momentous Allied victory 67 years ago. Don’t miss this informative presentation by Doug Laurie-Lean, Defence Scientist (Ret’d), Defence Research and Development of Canada, which will be followed by a question and answer period.
Opening hours of the Canada Aviation Museum
Regular schedule: Wednesday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Closed Mondays and Tuesdays except statutory and school holidays.
Please note the Museum will not be open on Monday, November 12, 2007.
The Canada Aviation Museum, is Canada’s best aviation museum with an internationally renown aeronautical collection. The Museum is located at the intersection of the Aviation and Rockcliffe Parkways. Admission is $6 adults; $5 for students; $5 for seniors; and $3 for children 4-15; free for children under 4. A family pass is $14. Free parking. OC Transpo bus #129 Rockcliffe also goes to the Museum.
