Travel Documents for Entering the United States

Water

What documents do Canadian citizens currently need to enter the United States by water

Currently, Canadian citizens, including children, DO NOT require a passport to enter the United States by water.

Canadian citizens should, however, carry documents that demonstrate their identity and citizenship. The following documents are some accepted forms of identification:

  • A birth certificate; and
  • A driver’s licence.

Oral declarations of identity and citizenship may be accepted, but it is recommended that travellers carry identification.

A valid Canadian passport is always an acceptable travel document to enter the United States by water. The NEXUS card is also an acceptable document to enter the United States by private boat.

As of January 31, 2008, the United States will require all travellers to present documents to enter the U.S.
