NRC presents Dr. Jennifer Estall with the H. L. Holmes award

Award winner seeks novel treatments for diabetic patients

October 03, 2007, Québec, QC — This morning, Dr. Pierre Coulombe, President of National Research Council Canada awarded Dr. Jennifer Estall with the H.L. Holmes award at the BioContact Quebec conference in Quebec City. Dr. Estall will receive $99,100 per year for two years to pursue research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute of the Harvard School of Medicine, in Boston.

Through this research, Dr. Estall hopes to gain a better understanding of the cellular mechanisms that facilitate beta-cell destruction. Understanding these mechanisms may allow for the identification of novel treatments to prevent or decrease pancreatic damage in diabetic patients.

The H.L. Holmes Award was established by the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) in honour of the late Dr. R.H.L. Holmes, a chemist who spent most of his research career in Alberta. Bequeathed by the late Dr. Holmes, in recognition of NRC's commitment to promote research excellence, the award gives recipients the opportunity to conduct post-doctoral studies under outstanding researchers at world famous graduate schools or research institutes. Research must be undertaken in the fields of chemistry, physics, biology or mathematics as they relate to medical and biological processes.

Recognized globally for research and innovation, Canada's National Research Council (NRC) is a leader in the development of an innovative, knowledge-based economy for Canadat through science and technology.
