Alleged Heroin Smuggler Arrested at the Airport

MONTRÉAL, Wednesday, October 31, 2007 – An investigation carried out by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has resulted in charges being laid against Christopher Ram, 21, of British Columbia, for heroin importation.

CBSA officers have seized three kilograms of heroin at the Montréal Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau International Airport after they became suspicious of a traveller. The drugs were handed over to the RCMP, which is leading the investigation in cooperation with the CBSA’s Intelligence Division. The individual was charged with importation of a controlled substance.

In the late afternoon of October 4, 2007, a British-Columbia resident reported to CBSA officers upon arrival of his flight from London. The officers conducted a thorough search of the traveller’s luggage and found that one suitcase had a false bottom, where the heroin in the form of tan rocks was concealed.

Cocaine Found in Luggage
A few weeks before, on September 10 to be precise, CBSA officers had seized five kilograms of cocaine inside an unclaimed suitcase at the Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau International Airport. According to documents found, the suitcase probably came on a flight from France. One suspect was questioned, but no charges have been laid so far. This matter remains under investigation by the RCMP Airport Federal Investigation Section.

Close cooperation between the CBSA and RCMP in drug seizures like this one helps reduce drug smuggling and combat criminal activity in our communities.
