The Honourable Mr. Justice Pierre-Basile Mignault

Pierre-Basile Mignault was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, on September 30, 1854. He was the son of Pierre-Basile Mignault and Catherine O'Callaghan. While attending McGill University, he did the required legal clerkship in the law office of Mousseau, Chapleau et Archambault. He graduated with a B.C.L. degree in 1878 and was called to the bar the same year. In 1906 he was president of the bar of Montreal, one of several positions he held in the 40 years he practised law in the city. The author of many legal texts, including the Manuel de droit parlementaire, the Traité de droit paroissial and the classic nine-volume Traité de droit civil, he taught civil law at McGill University part-time for six years. In 1914 he was appointed to the International Joint Commission, on which he sat for four years. On October 25, 1918, he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada. He served on the Court for 10 years, retiring on September 30, 1929. Justice Mignault died on October 15, 1945, at the age of 91.
