Permanent Resident Card

The Permanent Resident (PR) Card program issues PR Cards to permanent residents of Canada, who must present theirs when travelling by commercial carrier (airplane, boat, bus or train) in order to gain re-entry into Canada.

Application Information

  • Since June 28, 2002, permanent residents arriving in Canada have been automatically issued a PR Card and the cost of the Card has been included with their immigration application fees.
  • Permanent residents who arrived in Canada before June 28, 2002 must apply for a PR Card.
  • Individuals can view the status of their applications on-line using the Client Applications Status service.

Financial Information

  • There is a fee of $50 for a PR Card.

Dates and Deadlines

  • The program requires approximately one month to issue PR cards to permanent residents newly arriving in Canada and two months to process applications for permanent residents already in Canada.

Related Information

  • PR Cards are valid for a period of five years.
