Welcome to the RCMP External Review Committee

The RCMP External Review Committee is an independent agency reporting to Parliament through the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada.

Our mandate is one of civilian oversight of labour relations within Canada's national police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The Committee reviews certain grievances as well as appeals regarding formal disciplinary measures.

Upon completing its review of a case, the Committee presents recommendations to the Commissioner of the RCMP, who is the final decision-maker. The Commissioner is not bound by the recommendations of the Committee but he must provide reasons when he disagrees with the Committee in any given case. The disciplinary and grievance processes are described in About Us.

In carrying out its mandate, the Committee ensures that its recommendations are solidly grounded in law and that members of the RCMP are treated in a fair and equitable manner, in keeping with the public interest.

Communiqué

All the cases finalized by the Committee are summarized in the Communiqué, issued quarterly. In addition to the recommendations of the Committee, you will find a synopsis of the decisions of the Commissioner and articles written on various issues relating to our mandate.
