ecoAUTO Rebate Program

The ecoAUTO Rebate Program encourages Canadians to buy fuel-efficient vehicles by offering rebates to people who buy or lease (long-term for 12 months or more) a fuel-efficient vehicle.

Eligibility Information

  • Vehicles must be bought or leased through long-term lease agreements (12 months or more) on or after March 20, 2007.
  • Vehicles must never have been previously registered for use in Canada and they must meet the program's fuel consumption criteria.
  • The list of eligible vehicles can be found on Transport Canada's Web site.
  • Other criteria may apply.

Application Information

  • Consumers who wish to participate must provide a copy of their proof of purchase or a copy of the long-term lease agreement (12 months or longer) of the vehicle.
  • Consumers will be asked to provide a copy of their proof of registration in Canada as well as the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
  • The program ends December 31, 2008.
  • Applications must be received by March 31, 2009 in order to qualify for the rebate.

Financial Information

  • The rebates will range between $1,000 and $2,000.
  • The rebates are not taxable for individuals who acquire the vehicle for personal purposes.
  • If the vehicle is for business use, the rebate is taxable or the business may reduce the vehicle's depreciable cost. Contact the Canada Revenue Agency for more information.
