Child Disability Benefit (CDB)

The Child Disability Benefit (CDB) is a tax-free benefit for families who care for a child under age 18 with a severe and prolonged impairment in mental or physical functions.

Eligibility Information

Recipients must meet the following criteria:

  • be the primary caregivers of a child under age 18 with a severe and prolonged impairment in mental or physical functions
  • other criteria may apply

Application Information

  • If applicant is eligible for the CCTB but has not filed Form T2201 - Disability Tax Credit Certificate for a child who may be eligible, this form must be completed and signed by a qualified practitioner and sent to the applicant’s tax centre.
  • The CRA processes T2201 forms throughout the year, so applicants don't have to file a tax return before sending the form.

Financial Information

  • The CDB amount is calculated according to base income, which is determined by the number of children for whom the Canada Child Tax Benefit (CCTB) is received.

Dates and Deadlines

  • The CDB is paid as a monthly supplement to the CCTB.
  • The CCTB is usually issued on the 20th of each month, and one week earlier in December.
