Radioactive Waste

Waste Management   The Government of Canada is responsible for ensuring that the long-term management (including disposal) of radioactive waste is carried out in a safe, environmentally sound, comprehensive, cost-effective and integrated manner. Canada's approach to radioactive waste management is that the producers and owners of radioactive waste are responsible for the funding, organization, management and operation of disposal and other facilities required for their wastes.

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) develops policies to ensure that radioactive waste producers and owners meet their operational and funding responsibilities in accordance with waste plans. NRCan's policies span issues related to radioactive waste management produced during the fuel cycle, e.g.

  • nuclear fuel waste;
  • low-level radioactive waste; and
  • uranium mine and mill tailings.

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), the independent federal nuclear regulator, is responsible for ensuring that management of radioactive waste does not pose undue risks to workers, members of the public or the environment.

Producers and owners of radioactive waste are responsible for establishing the institutional and financial arrangements to implement the long-term management and/or disposal of these wastes. Institutional arrangements include plans, programs and organizational structures to implement related activities, whereas financial arrangements include financial considerations and mechanisms for plans and programs.
