PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, October 12, 2007 -- The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

The Honourable Michele M. Murphy, Q.C., of the Michele M. Murphy, Q.C. Law Office in Charlottetown, is appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island. She replaces Madam Justice Linda K. Webber, in Charlottetown, who resigned effective June 29, 2007.

Madam Justice Murphy received her Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from the University of New Brunswick in 1986, and a Bachelor of Arts (First Class Honours) from the University of New Brunswick in 1983. She was admitted to the Bar of Prince Edward Island in 1987, in which she practiced law privately until her appointment. She has developed a practice expertise in Immigration Law, Bankruptcy and Insolvency, Debt Restructuring, Corporate and Commercial, Real Estate, Wills and Estates.

In addition to her private practice, Madam Justice Murphy acted as a Community Councillor, Director of the PEI Business Hall of Fame, Member of the Canadian Unity Committee, PEI representative of the University of New Brunswick Forging the Future Campaign, Canvasser for Heart & Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society and Breast Cancer Foundation of Canada. She is past president of the Law Society of Prince Edward Island and is currently a member of the Prince Edward Island Discipline Committee.

This appointment is effective immediately.
