RefWorks

If you have already set up your RefWorks account:

Log-in to RefWorks
[Note - when you create an account an email is sent to your UoG email address. Save the email - it contains your login name, password, and the UoG group code. Note, too, that the Library will delete RefWorks account that have been inactive for a year.]

What is RefWorks?

RefWorks is a bibliographic management service that will collect, store and organize citations you've found to journal articles, books, web sites and other sources. Save time with RefWorks: it will create correctly formatted bibliographies and manuscripts automatically to the format you specify.

RefWorks is provided and maintained by the Library through a cooperative arrangement with the Ontario Council of University Libraries.

Who can use RefWorks?

RefWorks is available for use by all registered students, and the faculty and staff at the University of Guelph. Faculty may contact a departmental liaison librarian for help using RefWorks or to arrange instruction for students.

System requirements

RefWorks is web-based so there's no software you need to download and install, and it works with PC or Macintosh systems. RefWorks works best with Internet Explorer 5.0 (or later) and Netscape 6.0 (or later) and the latest version of Mozilla Firefox.

To start using RefWorks

Step one - Create a RefWorks account:

A. From a campus networked computer:

B. From a non-University of Guelph networked computer (home, off-campus office, any internet connection, anywhere):

Step two Search a journal article index:

  1. References from many of the Library's journal indexes can be selected and imported into a RefWorks database. View specific instructions on downloading citations from Guelph indexes.
  2. The basic process is to search the index, then select the references you require. In some indexes you may simply be able to press a button and have the references import directly into your RefWorks account. Many indexes require you to save the selected references to a file and then upload the file into your RefWorks account. Use the link to the help file provided for the specific index you are using.

Step three Using Write and Cite

Write-N-Cite is a software plug-in that enables Microsoft Word to incorporate citations from your RefWorks database into a paper or manuscript. As you are writing your paper, Write-N-Cite allows you to choose the correct citations from a RefWorks database you created and place them in the proper place in your paper. It can then format your paper and create the bibliography in the format you select. Write-N-Cite is already installed on the Library's computers. You will have to install Write-N-Cite on each personal computer you use. Write-N-Cite is available for Windows and Macintosh operating systems.
