Italian Bel Canto Salon
Admission: $45, $35 seniors & students
|
From “Venice of the North,” onwards to Venice itself!
We’re certain you won’t mind that we’ve replaced those
pesky gondolieri with the soaring voices of Canadian rising star soprano
Lucia Cesaroni and mezzo soprano Lynne McMurtry (back after her explosive
debut with Off Centre last season), who will introduce us to the arias
and canzonettas of Bellini and Donizetti. Our very own Boris Zarankin
will then make his singing debut… with the piano as his voice,
guiding us through Chopin’s cantabile piano repertoire inspired
by Bellini’s melodic style.

standards and free-improvisations will be played with an often telepathic

Times said, following one of Gabriela’s improvisational evenings,
“no matter how complex the variations, the original melody always
emerges from a musical tapestry that might weave blues, jazz, tango
and Debussy into a multihued framework.”

A Little Respect
With special guests, David Clayton-Thomas and Sharon
Riley & The Faith Chorale.
Admission: $40, $35 Students & Seniors
|
A Little Respect - Dione Taylor pays tribute
to the “Queen Of Soul” Aretha Franklin
2007 marks the 40 year anniversary of Aretha Franklin’s first landmark
recordings with Atlantic Records which produced “I Never Loved A Man
The Way I Love You”.
This concert will be a retrospective of the music and life of Aretha Franklin
from her early days in church, scarcely mentioned early jazz recordings
and her rise to fame as an R&B superstar.
Dione Taylor is one of Canada’s most intriguing R&B and Soul singers
and her star is quickly rising.
While she grew up in Saskatchewan she now calls Toronto home. Dione’s
biggest influence has been Aretha Franklin and she would like to pay homage
to her with this special CBC Radio 2 concert.
Dione and a star-studded group of musicians will trace the life of Aretha
Franklin and thus the history of Gospel, Jazz, R&B, Soul and The Blues.

Canad'artists International and Show One Productions presents
Arkady Yanivker, violin
Yuri Meyrowitz, piano
Admission: $30, $25 seniors & $15 students
|
Violinist Arkady Yanivker and pianist Yuri Meyrowitz present a recital
of highly charged sonatas by Korngold and Prokofiev, concluding with
Brahms' "F-A-E"Scherzo.
Korngold, one of the greatest musical child prodigies of all time, wrote
his monumental violin sonata at the age of sixteen. The work encompasses
an extremely wide range of emotions, inspired by the hyper romantic
passions of youth and the turbulence of the era preceding World War
I.
Prokofiev's Sonata in F was completed in the aftermath of World
War II, and reflects upon the harrowing anguish of the previous decade.
In contrast, Brahms' Scherzo makes no pretensions of being
anything other than pure music. It was written when the composer was
twenty years old as his contribution to a collaborative sonata presented
as a gift to the great violinist Joseph Joachim.
