Michael Steinitz — St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada

Dr. Steinitz is professor of physics at St. Francis Xavier University (St. FX), where he has been since 1973. He is a past president of the Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) and for three years was chair of the board of directors of the Canadian Institute for Photonic Innovations. In 2006 he was honored by the CAP with its Peter Kirkby medal for outstanding service to Canadian physics, in particular for his leadership of Canadian efforts for the World Year of Physics 2005. His research is in experimental solid state physics, using neutron scattering and other techniques to study the magnetic behaviour of rare-earth and transition metals. For 30 years he has run the concert series at St. FX, helping to launch the careers of many Canadian chamber musicians and soloists.
