About This ServiceThe objective of the National Library of Canada's Canadian Information By Subject service is to provide links to information about Canada, arranged by subject, from Internet resources around the world. The subject arrangement is in the form of an inverted "Subject Tree" which is based on the structure of the Dewey Decimal Classification System, the most widely-used library classification system in the world. DDC is copyrighted by OCLC Forest Press, and is used here with their permission. You do not need to know the DDC system in order to use this service. Our Subject Tree is made up of ten main branches numbered 0 to 9, each representing a broad discipline or field of study. Each of these main branches is divided into smaller and more specific branches, represented by longer numbers. For example:
You may browse the Subject Tree in subject order or in alphabetical order. The Subject Tree - Subject Order provides an overview of the top two levels of the subject hierarchy. The Subject Tree - Alphabetical Order (alphabetical index) lists the currently accessible subjects in alphabetical order. Whenever possible, index terms have been taken from standard subject headings lists: LCSH (Library of Congress Subject Headings) and CSH (Canadian Subject Headings) for English terminology, and RVM (Répertoire de vedettes-matière) for French. The name of the site appears as it is found on the home page for that site. If a site offers only English access, it is included in both the English and the French versions of Canadian Information by Subject, with its title in English (i.e. site names are not translated). If a site offers bilingual access, the English version of Canadian Information By Subject points to the English site and its title is given in English. The French version points to the French site and its title is given in French. Some sites offer only English access, even though they have both an English and French title. In cases such as this, the French version of Canadian Information by Subject will point to a French title, but the site may offer only English access. Sites are listed in alphabetical order under each heading. Geographic qualifiers are added to site names as necessary for clarity. Canadian Information By Subject includes pointers to many different information sources. The National Library of Canada makes every effort to ensure the links are accurate and current. All links to remote sites are checked on a regular basis. Some of these sites may be temporarily overloaded or unavailable for short periods. Sites may also move or disappear completely. The National Library of Canada has no control over the availability of remote sites, and is not responsible for the information found at those sites. The inclusion of a site in Canadian Information By Subject does not constitute an endorsement or recommendation by the National Library of Canada. Please note that this service is updated regularly and is constantly developing and expanding. Be sure to check back often to see the latest additions. We welcome your comments on features that would be useful, and your suggestions for links to other sites providing information about Canada. If you find a link that has been relocated or has disappeared, please let us know. Please send comments to: |
