Information Notice - Access to Information and Privacy - Severing Information in Electronic Documents
No. 2007- 12 October 12, 2007 To: Access to Information and Privacy Coordinators Subject: Severing Information in Electronic DocumentsOn October 12, 2007, a Security Policy Implementation Notice was sent by the Treasury Board Secretariat to all Departmental Security Officers and Information Technology Security Coordinators, as well as a notice sent by Public Safety Canada. If you require copies of these notices, please contact us at ippd-dpiprp@tbs-sct.gc.ca or at 613-946-4945. You will note that all institutions that provide electronic documents in response to Access to Information Act and Privacy Act (ATIP) requests are being asked to re-assess their software and procedures to ensure that information severed from documents has been permanently removed and cannot be recovered by requestors. Departments and agencies should cease responding to ATIP requests in electronic format until they are certain that any potential risks have been addressed.
